Happy 100th Birthday to the K.K. Berge Building!

In 1924, Norwegian immigrant Knute K. Berge and his wife Louise opened a tailor shop in this newly constructed building. It has gone through many changes since and was almost torn down for flood mitigation.

Korthuis Jewelry and Gifts owned the building and had their store here for many years (now you can find them just down the block). In 2011, the building was saved from demolition for of flood mitigation by the Granite Falls Riverfront Revitalization, a non profit group of concerned citizens who could see the unique location and value of the building.

This kicked off a new era of community focus on Main Street, and the building was rented to the Granite Area Arts Council and the Granite Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, for a few years until it was sold to the current owners, the Granite Area Arts Council.

The Granite Area Arts Council, a local non-profit is devoted to building community through art. The building currently houses two art galleries, an artisanal gift shop and a basement event space used for summer art classes in the prominent location next to the historic Roebling footbridge.

For its birthday, the building was just gifted a new mural on the south side of the building.
